Annual steam shutdown: June 2026

UCR’s Central Plant will conduct a routine inspection and maintenance of the steam utility distribution system.

When: Friday, June 5 at 12:00 PM through Friday, June 12 at 5:00 PM.

Impact: Heat and steam will be turned off throughout campus facilities. This shutdown will affect building heating, hot water, sterilization, autoclave operations, and other laboratory processes. Affected buildings are listed below.

Purpose: This inspection ensures the continued, reliable delivery of pressurized steam and hot water for campus buildings. Such delivery is essential for sterilization, laboratory processes, and climate control. Warmer weather and a smaller campus population during summer create minimal demand for steam, thus reducing the impact on the campus community.

Safety: Operators will turn off campus boilers to cool for two days and will begin work on June 7. The Central Plant and steam tunnels will require intensive labor for this shutdown. Skilled trade staff will work in shifts to shut down the boilers, drain the system, make necessary repairs, reignite the boilers, reintroduce high-pressure steam, check the entire system for leaks, and bring buildings back online. They plan to relight the boilers on the morning of June 12 to fully restore steam by 5:00 PM.
