Campus upgrades completed to welcome students for fall

Fall quarter is here, and Facilities Services is ready for new students after spending the summer preparing the campus. From June through August, the team undertook enhancements to create a welcoming environment across the university.

Facilities Services staff worked collaboratively to improve classrooms, lecture halls, restrooms, lounges, and common areas, reflecting UCR's commitment to community and ensuring a pleasant experience for visitors.

The Client Support Services team, which serves as the first point of contact for facilities-related inquiries, is ready to handle about 4,300 work orders in anticipation of the busy fall quarter. New student workers were onboarded to help process these requests, and an updated guide to services with labor rates was released.

Substantial custodial and resource management work was completed, with teams cleaning 3.2 million square feet of campus daily. This summer’s focus included deep cleaning over 100 general assignment classrooms and 550 restrooms, along with carpet and floor maintenance, chair repairs, and ADA furniture compliance. Over 80% of the cleaning materials used meet green criteria, aligning with the university’s sustainability goals.

Landscaping improvements included adding mulch and new plants in Housing, tree trimming, and renovating turf in athletic fields. The team also cleaned and painted hundreds of dumpsters and deep cleaned collection vehicles and equipment.

Maintenance crews continued work on a large infrastructure upgrade project by removing outdated high-voltage switchgear across campus, which will improve reliability. They also installed Variable Frequency Drives, or VFDs, on the campus’s water pump systems, allowing pumps to independently maintain water levels and reduce energy use.

Through these summer routines and new upgrade initiatives, Facilities Services is working to ensure a smooth transition for new and returning students in the academic year ahead.
