Chiller Replacement

Chiller Replacement Project

Chiller Replacement
The 1988 Chiller is removed to make way for a new chiller.

In a $1.4 million project, Facilities Services recently replaced one of its five chillers in its central steam plant. The chiller, weighing several hundred tons, was carefully installed in sections with large parts lifted in by crane. The machine will support most of campus with chilled water and air conditioning by removing liquid heat using vapor compression and reducing energy through solar power. It will assist the central steam plant in storing over seven million gallons of water at 38 degrees in underground tanks. Large pumps assist with utility distribution through underground pipes and is monitored around the clock with sophisticated BEST control technology. The chiller it replaced was over 30 years old and required significantly more energy. It took extensive coordination to dissemble, remove and replace.
